🇲🇾 About KLNomad

I Live Here.
I Write What I Know.

KLNomad is an independent guide to Kuala Lumpur — written by a local for expats, digital nomads and travellers who want the real picture, not the tourist brochure version.

🙋 Who I Am

My name is Syakir. I’m Malaysian, based in KL, and I started KLNomad because I kept finding the same problem — most guides about living in Kuala Lumpur were either written by tourists who visited for a week, or they were full of outdated information that hadn’t been checked in years.

I’m not a financial expert or a professional journalist. I’m just someone who lives here, pays local rent, eats at the hawker stalls, and has spent a lot of time figuring out how to manage money and daily life in KL — especially as someone who cares about making better financial decisions. If something I’ve learned along the way saves you time or money, that’s the whole point of this site.

📍 Based in Malacca & KL. I split my time between both — so I write from real, current experience of living and working in Malaysia, not from memory or a single visit.

📋 What KLNomad Covers

KLNomad focuses on practical information that expats and nomads actually need — not generic tips you can find anywhere. The core topics are:

  • 💳
Money & Banking How to receive foreign income cheaply, the best money transfer apps, and how to avoid losing money on exchange rates.
  • 🏙️
Expat Living & Cost of Living Real rent prices, food costs, transport, healthcare — honest estimates based on what I’ve seen and paid, not copied from other sites.
  • 💻
Coworking & Remote Work Spaces for getting work done in KL — reviewed honestly, including the ones that aren’t worth your time.
  • 🏨
Hotels & Accommodation Practical guides to finding a place to stay or live in KL — from short-term stays to long-term expat apartments.
  • 📋
Expat Essentials Visas, SIM cards, local banking, healthcare — the practical stuff you need to actually settle into life in KL.

✊ How I Write

I try to write the way I’d explain something to a friend — honestly, without padding, and without pretending I know more than I do. If something is great, I’ll say so. If it’s overpriced or not worth it, I’ll say that too.

The numbers and prices on this site are based on real observations and my own experience — not copied from other websites. I update articles when things change. And I’m always clear about what I know for sure versus what I’m estimating.

It never changes what I recommend — I only link to things I’d genuinely suggest to someone I know. Read the full Affiliate Disclosure →

👤 The Person Behind KLNomad

Founder & Writer · KLNomad

I’m not a financial advisor — just someone based in Malaysia who got tired of losing money on things I didn’t fully understand. I write about money, daily life, and navigating KL because I’m still figuring it all out myself, and I’d rather share what I learn along the way than pretend I have it all figured out. If something helps you make a better decision, that’s enough for me.

🔍 Why Trust KLNomad?

  • No paid positive reviews I don’t accept payment to write favourably about anything. If I recommend something, it’s because I think it’s genuinely useful.
  • Honest about what I don’t know When something is an estimate or based on limited information, I say so. I’d rather be honest about uncertainty than confidently wrong.
  • Kept up to date KL changes fast — rent prices, visa rules, app fees. I revisit and update articles when things change so the information stays useful.
  • Written by a real person Everything on KLNomad is written by me — someone who actually lives in Malaysia and is dealing with the same things you are.
